For approximately 6500 euros, you can have the upcoming Fiat Topolino budget hatchback -- the patent design drawings of which can be seen here for your scrutiny. Shown here is the basic construction of the car that's expected to go on sale in 2010. So far, Fiat has given no confirmation about the Topolino name; however, what is definite is Fiat's commitment to create a new ultra-cheap city car. It is speculated that the car will be less than three meters long. Powering it is a new two-cylinder petrol engine. In the normally aspirated form, it will produce around 65bhp.
In the turbocharged form, it will be able to produce 90bhp. Instead of aluminum, the new motor will use a cost-saving iron engine block. Since the car will utilize Fiat's innovative MultiAir variable valve system, it should be extremely clean. The company is said to be targeting CO2 emissions of less than 90g/km. When the Topolino does go on sale, it will hold the record of being the first two-cylinder car to be sold across western European markets since the demise of the Citroen 2CV.
The car will be marketed as a small, stylish car to the richer markets while in developing markets, it will be promoted as a value choice. Reportedly, the car will be manufactured at the Zastava plant in Kragujevac, Serbia. It may come as a surprise to most people but the original Topolino was actually built by Fiat from 1936 to 1955. The name translates as "little mouse" or "Mickey Mouse".
