For those who are interested in knowing which brand provides the highest initial quality, the 2009 J.D. Power & Associates survey, which measures problems encountered in the first three months of vehicle ownership, has given the honor to the Lexus brand. The title, which was held by Porsche in the last three years with a score of 90 problems for every 100 cars, was wrested by Lexus which had only 84 problems for every 100 units sold.
In third place was Cadillac with 91 problems reported per 100 units. The luxury division of GM is one of four local brands with quality scores above the industry average, or 108 problems per 100 units. Ford came with 102 reported problems for every 100 cars, Chevrolet came in next with 103 problems, Mercury got 106 problems per 100 vehicles, tying with Infiniti.
Hyundai performed better with 95 problems than Honda's 99 and Mercedes Benz and Toyota which both got 101 problems apiece. Judging from last year's industry's average of 118 and this year's 108, the general reliability of vehicles is clearly improving. [via automotive news]
