New Toyota Ponam-28V Boat is Powered by a Land Cruiser Motor

Article by Christian A., on October 31, 2016

Toyota revealed that the latest version of its Ponam boat range will be a 28V sports cruiser and it will be powered by the same engine that powers the Land Cruiser.

Specifically, it will be the same 4-cylinder 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine that is fitted in the Land Cruiser Prado SUV as well as the Hilux pickup truck. However, for the Ponam-28V, the motor has been tuned to adapt it for marine use and thus, it displays an output of 256 horsepower (191 kW). While Toyota declined to reveal the actual top speed, the light weight means that it could go through the water at possibly high knots.

Since the control system is based on the same system used by cars, it makes the Ponam-28V easy to navigate in calm waters or even in coastal areas where it is originally designed to be in. Fitted to it is a virtual anchor to make sure that the boat is maintained on a fixed point.

In terms of dimensions, the Ponam-28V has a total length of 30 ft. (9.14 m) with overall width at 10 ft. (3.1 m). These figures mean that this boat could allow for 12 people to be accommodated inside. Inside, there is a table with each side having two small sofas as well as a large single chair. Meanwhile just in front of the helm station is a double bed. For a boat of this size, one will likely see that its aft deck is rather large and comes with fold-out furniture.

Overall weight is at 8,025 lbs. (3,640 kg.). This is due to the company utilizing the Hybrid Hull construction. The V-shaped hull of the Ponam-28V is composed of a combination of carbon fibers, aluminum, and fiber-reinforced plastic. Thus, the result is that the hull is seven times stronger compared to a version that is purely composed of fiber-reinforced plastic. In addition, this composition also ensured that the hull would weigh 10% lighter when compared to a hull having the same size but made entirely of aluminum.

Similar to the other models in the Ponam range, the Ponam-28V will be manufactured by Yanmar. While sale of this version is limited to Japan, though those interested can still buy this boat there and simply have it delivered wherever.

Starting price of the Ponam-28V is estimated at 19.2 million yen, which is around $183,000. According to Toyota, the company hopes to sell around 24 units of the Ponam-28V through its network composed of 50 dealers.

Toyota revealed that the brand will remain to promote its marine division by developing products that are attractive and designed not only to support customer’s fulfilling lifestyle but to also allow for rewarding leisure time activities.
