Lincoln expects MKT crossover to do well in alternative markets

Lincoln is anticipating that sales of the MKT crossover would pick up but instead of the mass markets, the carmaker is hoping that the model will do well in unconventional ones. Last October, Lincoln divulged that two modified MKT platforms were in development for the livery market -- replacements for the base and stretched Town Car. The livery business workhorse is set to be discontinued in August 2011. Then there’s the MKT-based hearse for the funeral business. It’s apparent that the MKT's wheelbase was significantly stretched. The rear passenger door is a lot longer than the door on the regular MKT.
Its roof has been padded and it has been raised by almost a foot. The rear-end styling was significantly reworked to accommodate a wide door that is hinged on the left side. In addition, the MKT taillight theme is similar to that of the consumer model. A Lincoln spokesman denies that the company is planning to enter the hearse-making business. Lincoln spokesman Christian Bokich said that this appears to be a prototype from one of the livery upfitters.
He said that what the carmaker will offer are “conversion-ready kits for hearses.” He revealed that Lincoln will be working with some suppliers for these vehicles. Last October, Ford Motor Co. announced that two new livery vehicles based on the MKT will be available starting in early 2012. The first is a standard livery vehicle with stretched second-row seating while the second is a modified heavy-duty chassis version for limousine modification. [via autonews - sub. required]
