Lincoln offers the new MKT Town Car as an alternative to the Town Car, which will be phased out along with other vehicles that are built on the Panther Platform such as the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The Lincoln Town Car is famous for being the “black car,” a private limo for the wealthy individuals of New York and other cities. This big sedan was a rear-drive, body-on-frame vehicle that was well-liked for its robust nature, cheap repair costs and the fact that it only required routine maintenance.
On the other hand, Lincoln’s replacement, the MKT, is based on a front-drive chassis (though all-wheel-drive is available) and uses a modern V6 engine. In response to doubts about the MKT being able to manage being driven through the pot-hole ridden pavement of Manhattan, Lincoln has beefed up the chassis, brakes and other components. Lincoln also is prepared to provide re-enforcements if clients wanted to stretch the MKT by 10 feet, a capability built in to the Town Car from the factory.
Other features include Wi-fi capability, a SYNC system and special rear seat pockets for maps and newspapers. The rear seats were moved back by 1.5 inches to have more leg room with reclining rear seats and controls for the front passenger chair if the back seat riders wanted more leg room. The MKT has 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space, providing more room for material objects than the Town Car but the old-money cachet of the outgoing vehicle has dimmed quite a bit.
