Local Motors Rally Fighter: an outrageous vehicle powered by Bmw

Believe it or not, 3,000 online members designed this diesel-powered off-road beast. The Local Motors Rally, which is aimed at desert racers, is a 3,100-lb off-road vehicle that seats four persons, has a BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine that delivers 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque and even in off-road environments, it claims to return 30 mpg. A necessity for surviving jumps, the manually-adjustable, dual-ride-height suspension allows using 18 inches alloy wheels. However, it still offers a tolerable settling for city driving.
To explain further how community design works, Local Motors said that the members of this online community discuss and vote on aspects such as styling and powertrains. The result is an incredibly specialized vehicle that was developed by thousands of enthusiasts, engineers, and designers.
Production for the Rally Fighter will be limited to 3,000 vehicles and will be in Phoenix. Local Motors plans to manufacture its vehicles in one of the many regional "micro-factories" that it plans to set up based on demand for specific models. These small-volume manufacturing centers also will act as dealerships. Reservations for the Rally Fighter can be made starting July 15. Final pricing is expected to be around $50,000, with production scheduled to begin in the fall of 2010.
