Lotus planning to develop its own dual-clutch gearbox

Lotus is believed to be developing its own dual-clutch gearbox. As evidence of that, documents have been filed in the British patent office proving that Lotus is looking into that technology. Known for its innovation, Lotus is likely to use the transmission in its own cars and possibly sell the technology or parts to other carmakers.
While DCTs can provide lightning-quick shifts between gears, executed quicker and faster than any human, there are detractors saying that they reduce the driver‚ involvement. Lotus would likely ask its customers to choose from either a manual or dual-clutch transmission, permitting those who prefer a three-pedal setup to purchase their ideal car. There are not many details about the transmission. However, the patent drawings illustrate Lotus' design to carry eight speeds (seven forward and one reverse). It also is apparent that it is being designed for both front- and rear-wheel-drive applications. Lotus has a mantra of "simplify, then add lightness," hence, there‚ every expectation that the gearbox is lithe and full of clever design ideas.
