Lotus to cease production of the Europa this year

2010 Lotus Europa

Lotus' production of the Europa, the Elise-based coupe, will end later this year. There's no surprise here. It was expected due to its poor showing plus the recent launch of the highly applauded Evora. Sources say that European dealers have stopped taking orders for the Elise-based coupe. Production will wind down within the next few months to complete the few orders that remain. It can be recalled that in 2006, the Europa had its launching. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that could deliver about 200hp and 200 pound-feet of torque. Many now believe that the Europa was probably a stopgap used by Lotus to fill the need for a larger, more compliant coupe before the arrival of the Evora last year. Three variants were offered, including the S and SE, which received a boost in output to 220hp and an equal amount of torque in early 2008.
