Magna to assemble the frame for GM’s next generation pickups and SUVs
Weeks after Magna International Inc.’s bid for GM’s European Opel unit fell through, Magna continues to be one of the foremost suppliers to automakers worldwide. Recently, Cosma International, a Magna unit that makes bodies and chassis, got a deal to assemble the frame for General Motors Co.’s next generation of full-sized pickups and SUVs.
In a statement, Magna said that Cosma will produce its third generation of frames for this GM platform. Cosma will build the frames for the high-volume light trucks in St. Thomas, Ontario, and Saltillo, Mexico. According to the Automotive News’ list of top 100 global suppliers, Aurora, Ontario-based Magna ranks fourth, with sales to automakers amounting to $23.3 billion in 2008. This figure makes it the largest supplier in North America. Magna was the preferred bidder to purchase Opel but at the last minute, GM had chosen to keep Opel.
