Making next Panda in Italy, too expensive for Fiat?

Fiat's proposal to move production of the next-generation Panda to Italy would cost 300 million to 400 million euros more than if production remained at the Poland factory, according to a report by Automotive News Europe. Last Wednesday, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne informed Italy's government and unions that the company is thinking about transferring production to Poland starting 2011. The relocation of the successor to Europe's best-selling minicar to Italy would help Fiat meet a request from the Italian government to increase domestic passenger car production by 50% to about 900,000 units a year by 2012. Fiat's plant in Tychy, Panda, currently builds the Panda as well as the Ford Ka, Fiat 500 and Seicento minicars. According to Marchionne, the Panda is most likely to be built at its Pomigliano d'Arco plant, which is where the Alfa Romeo 147 compact, the GT coupe, the 159 mid-sized sedan and wagon are being built.
