This is the second victory for Mark Webber for the season at the British Grand Prix. In this race, Webber had beaten long-time leader Fernando Alonso in the closing laps at Silverstone. Crowds were apprehensive when the rains were pouring down and the car parks had become flooded but at the start of the race, the weather was bright and sunny. It’s lucky that no rains fell on the circuit. The 52-lap event wasn’t extremely exciting but there was an interesting tactical combat between Ferrari, which started Alonso on hard tires, and Red Bull, which acquired the soft tires early in the event and then switched to the harder sets, which had become highly competitive on the day of the race. For most of the race, Alonso had kept a 5-second lead but when he switched to the soft-compound Pirellis for the last phase, there was no answer to the speed of Webber's car. Webber was able to catch up to Alonso with four laps to go and it later withdrew, allowing the world championship leader to focus on getting ahead of third-ranked Sebastian Vettel, who had a quiet race. With Webber’s win, it means that Alonso's championship advantage has been cut to 13 points as the second half of the season with more than half the season still left. The British drivers didn’t have such a good time too. Paul di Resta had an early retirement after his Force India experienced tire and suspension damage after bumping into the Lotus driven by Romain Grosjean.
