Maserati planning to go hybrid

As part of a campaign to improve fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of its cars, Maserati is developing a hybrid drivetrain option for its next generation of models. It's likely that Maserati will be utilizing research that Ferrari is doing in this area. At the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, Ferrari revealed an experimental 599 hybrid that can better sustain the costs of developing hybrid hardware and bringing it into production. With the split that occurred in early 2006, Maserati and Ferrari are not anymore a part of the same business unit within the Fiat empire. However, Ferrari is the brand that's closest conceptually to Maserati when it comes to hardware. In fact, Maranello is already a major supplier. Maserati also seeks to reduce the weight of its range.
