More details have been released about Maserati’s new sports car that will likely be rivalling the Porsche 911. Auto Express said that the new Maserati will get an all-new powertrain. So instead of a V-8, the new Maserati will be using a twin-turbocharged V-6. It’s believed that the new car will be named the Maserati GranSport, and will start selling by 2015. There were hints that the GranSport will use an existing Maserati 4.7-liter V-8 engine but it has been reported that it will get a twin-turbo V-6 engine. This engine could deliver more than 450hp, permitting a vehicle to go from zero to 60mph in less than four seconds and to reach a maximum speed of 190 mph. Power is distributed from the mid-mounted engine to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, based on the one used on the Ferrari 458 Italia. It was also said that the twin-turbo V-6 engine will be used on the upcoming Maserati Kubang SUV and a future BMW 5 Series-sized sedan that will be positioned below the next Quattroporte.
The styling between the models would be similar but AE clarifies that the Maserati GranSport will use the same carbon-fiber chassis as the Alfa Romeo 4C concept. However, the wheelbase and track are extended to fit the V-6 engine. Even if the GranSport is somewhat bigger than its Alfa parent, it’s apparent that Maserati is aiming for a curb weight of 2640 pounds. If the car can deliver higher than 450 hp and weigh just 2640 pounds, it would have the power-to-weight ratio of the Ferrari Enzo-based Maserati MC12.
That car could deliver 623 hp and a curb weight of around 3150 pounds, for a total of 5.05 pounds per hp. It was also reported that the Maserati GranSport would have a ratio of 5.87 pounds per hp. Maserati asserted that the limited-edition MC12 could reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and could achieve a top speed of 205 mph. It’s likely that Maserati will put the two-seat GranSport as a rival to the Porsche 911 and Audi R8. It has a starting price of about $140,000. The new sporting model is significant as Maserati aims to raise its volume to 50,000 sales worldwide by 2015. The Kubang SUV, the new sedans, and the GranSport sports car are expected to help in reaching this target too.
