Mazda decides to lose weight and boost the efficiency of regular engines

Mazda wants to be radical in its approach to the hybrid solution. So, instead of going the standard way of gasoline-electric to increase fuel economy, it has decided to simply lose weight and boost the efficiency of regular engines. Mazda3 versions that come with start-stop technology and a dual-clutch transmission are going to be available in both the European and Japanese markets. These two technologies might filter through to other models in the Mazda range.

Mazda believes that hybrids and EVs will be a niche market in 2015, but with the arrival of more affordable hybrids such as the latest 2010 Honda Insight has worried the company since they do not have the capability to enter the hybrid price battle.

However, the Mazda Tribute is made available to commercial customers as a hybrid with a system similar to the Ford Escape Hybrid since it was to a large extent engineered by Ford. The only in-house hybrids that Mazda has come up with have been a couple of hydrogen-fueled demo cars which are now being leased in Japan in small numbers.
