Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show

These are new photos of Mazda’s MX-5 Superlight Concept presently showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. To reduce the overall weight of the car, it has no windscreen hence, it is believed to improve performance and fuel efficiency. Powering the Superlight concept is a 1.8-liter unit which is the same engine of the production version.

It is claimed to be capable of achieving better figures compared with the stock powerplant. In a news release, Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda Motor Europe’s chief designer, said that he has long dreamed of creating a Mazda MX-5 with this radical form. He said that with the focus on weight reduction in automotive development, it’s the right time to show how lightweight a car could possibly be. More details and live photos after the jump!

The Superlight concept’s engine develops 126 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 167 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm.

To help it achieve a fuel consumption rating of 6.3 l/100km (37.3 mpg), the engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The MX-5 Superlight concept is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

It releases 150 grams of CO2 per kilometer and is equipped with 205/45 R17 tires and ventilated brake discs on the front and solid discs on the rear.
