Mazda North American Operations has appointed Russell Wager as vice president of marketing. In an e-mail to Automotive News, Mazda spokesman Eric Booth said that Wager will be replacing John Abel, the current US marketing chief. Mazda will later announce the position reserved for Abel. Wager was a senior vice president and managing director at the Beijing office of DDB Advertising. He also had roles at TBWA/Hakuhodo International in Tokyo. Wager has also handled automotive accounts at several ad agencies like TBWA/Chiat/Day, David & Goliath., and Doner Advertising. For his new role, Wager will be responsible for overseeing U.S. marketing communications, including print and electronic advertising, social media. He will also oversee the Mazda U.S. Web site, auto shows and relationship with the carmaker’s marketing communications agency, The Garage Team Mazda. Wager will be reporting to Robert Davis, senior vice president of Mazda's U.S. operations group. Mazda posted a 12-percent increase in vehicle sales in the US for the first eight months of 2012 to 185,349 units.
