Due largely to the "Cash for Clunkers" (CARS) program, Mazda reported its best sales month of the year. It also recorded the best August since 2003, with August 2009 sales of 26,542 units representing a 12.1% increase compared to August 2008, and up 20.7% on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis. Jim O'Sullivan, MNAO president and CEO, said that the CARS program brought customers back to the showrooms in volumes we haven't seen in nearly 18 months." He said that he believes almost all manufacturers with a qualifying vehicle experienced an increase for the month. He remains optimistic that "better times are ahead for the industry."
