2013 McLaren 12C Spider

After one teaser, the McLaren 12C Spider became official today and showed us the RHT folding roof system. Priced from £195,500 in the UK, the new car is powered by the same 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine found on the coupe and capable to deliver 625 PS. The 12C Spider can sprint from 0 tp 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.1 seconds, which means it is as fast at the coupe. Still, the coupe is with 0.1 seconds faster than the spider when it sprints from 0 to 160 km/h (100 mph) as the coupe achieves this speed in just 6.0 seconds. From 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) the coupe sprints in 8.8 seconds, while the new 12C Spider needs 9.0 seconds.

The 12C Spider has a top speed of 329 km/h (204 mph) while the coupe hits 333 km/h or 207 mph. Both models need 11.7 liters of fuel for 100 km (62 miles). According to the official press release, the McLaren 12C Spider is with 40 kg heavier than the coupe due to the convertible roof system. The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) is operated using a switch in the lower section of the centre console and can transform the car from a coupe to a convertible in just 17 seconds.

Moreover, the roof can “dissapear” at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph). Furthermore, the vehicle features a rear windscreen which can be electronically lowered and raised, acting as a wind deflector in order to minimize disturbance. What is more interesting is that if the roof is raised, the are under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area, providing 52 litres of useful storage space. The 12C Spider also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximise occupant safety.
