As early as 2012, McLaren will start to offer a limited run of GT3 race cars that are based on its MP4-12C supercar. McLaren has confirmed as well as that under this project in collaboration with CRS Racing, these cars will participate in several European GT races in 2011. The road car will be powered by a 592bhp, twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine that will rev to 8500rpm, with its peak 442lb ft of torque offered from 3000rpm, although 80% is available between 2000-6500rpm.
On the other hand, Ferrari’s 458 delivers 562bhp and 398lb ft and the Mercedes produces SLS 563bhp and 479lb ft from their V8 engines. These two companies have partnered previously. About 15 years ago, they built the Le Mans winning McLaren F1 GTR. And 12 years ago for the Le Mans, they made six ‘Longtails’ - F1 GTRs made for the 1997 FIA GT.
Andrew Kirkaldy, Team Principal, CRS Racing said: “It is a rare opportunity to work with a company like McLaren and we are proud to be involved. Together, we aim to produce the highest quality GT car on the grid. The level of engineering experience at McLaren is unparalleled and this will be reflected in the 12C GT3. One of the most important aspects of this programme will be customer service and for that reason we will be building a limited number of cars at a competitive price. The result will be an incredible GT car with manageable running costs and good residual value that will provide its owner with an unrivalled experience.”
