There is a move to increase road car production by McLaren from the current 100 units annually to around 1,000 cars by 2011 and ultimately achieve a 4,000 unit production rate per year. The target is to become competitive with Ferrari and Lamborghini with regards to production volume and also to provide more affordable cars.
McLaren is said to be planning a trio of new models, one of which will come with a price tag under $100,000. However, at this point in time only one new super car has been confirmed ready for launch and it is targeted to rival the Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari F430. McLaren has been directly affected by the ongoing financial dilemma, but they believe that it is the right time to "power through the recession"even though they foresee that high-end sports cars will lose around 50 percent of their annual sales of 24,000 units this year, they also foresee, on the other hand, an end to the crisis by 2011. This move to launch a new model will create about 400 new jobs, boost market value and consequently strengthen its automotive department.
