McLaren boss Ron Dennis bares the truth behind his company’s decision to build road cars. At the Autosport Awards where he was presented with a lifetime achievement award, Dennis mentioned being inspired by Ferrari’s success and looking at how the change will provide long-term gains to the company as being among the reasons.

Of course, the decision cost the team its exclusive deal with Mercedes. Dennis says that it really is about the “development of the brand.” He talked about its great partners, which includes Mercedes-Benz, that have been “phenomenally strong.” Continued after the jump!

He said that he considered Ferrari’s achievements when he became convinced that it is “absolutely categorically” the right thing for it to do.

He added that he believes it is a “win-win situation” for everyone and that he is delighted for Brawn and the Mercedes GP team of the future. When asked if he would be making an F1 comeback next season, he made it clear that he had no plans and that his focus is on McLaren’s road car division.

He said though that his heart is in motor racing so he will definitely be attending the races but only as a spectator. In the next few years, McLaren will be building a range of sportscars, with the MP4-12C slated to be the first vehicle to come out.
