McLaren will add new models each year, starting with MP4-12C

Fresh from its introduction of the MP4-12C model, McLaren will be proceeding to expand its supercar lineup with new additions, The Detroit Bureau reports. Antony Sheriff, the Managing Director of McLaren, said that with the addition of a battery-based car in the near future, McLaren will be able to comply with the new fuel economy and emissions standards. The first model in this plan is the MP4-12C, a $229,000 (EUR156,600) car that will arrive in 9 US dealerships later this year.
Sheriff said that McLaren will offer a new model “about once a year.” Sheriff said that McLaren will be making two-seat sports cars that use a “whole room of Formula One technology” that the automaker has available. The MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine that can develop 600 hp (448 kW).
Meeting the European and U.S. mileage standards is a challenge but Sheriff isn’t much concerned about it since there are a few exceptions for small companies in the European regulations. Sheriff also said that to meet the fuel economy standards, McLaren will be making use of lightweight carbon fiber as well as advanced turbocharging technology.
