Mercedes-Benz 2010 production to beat 2008 record of 1.19 million vehicles

The vehicle output of Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit for 2010 is at a record high, fueled by the demand for the E- and S-Class sedans. In a statement, Mercedes said that it plans to build 1.2 million cars and sport-utility vehicles in 2010, beating its previous record of 1.19 million set in 2008. BMW is the world's largest maker of luxury vehicles while Mercedes is in second place. In this statement, Wolfgang Bernhard, the boss of Mercedes operations, said that its production was at “high speed,” particularly in the second half.
Output was reduced last year during the financial crisis but the demand in the luxury-car segment has already snapped back due to the growth in China and the U.S. recovery. Mercedes is aiming to increase sales by at least 10% this year compared to deliveries of 1.09 million vehicles in 2009.
For the first 11 months of 2010, deliveries had climbed 13% to 1.15 million, including the Smart city-car brand. According to Mercedes spokeswoman Verena Mueller, the company's sales target has remained unchanged. It’s fairly common for automobile production and sales not to match up since manufacturers could either be building or lowering inventory.
