Supporting claims that it is one of the cleanest luxury carmakers, Mercedes-Benz will have 58 BlueEfficiency models in the market before the end of the year. Just yesterday, Mercedes-Benz announced the additions to the E-Class range. The BlueEfficiency name refers to cars that possess a range of design features and materials that cause a car to be 23% more efficient than a regular vehicle. If you want to find evidence of Mercedes-Benz's success in this department, you'll only have to look no further than the new E-Class.

Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler board member for group research and development for Mercedes-Benz cars, said that the E-Class combines the latest in engine technology and the world's best cd value in its class with targeted vehicle optimization measures, including lightweight design and intelligent energy management.

BlueEfficiency is not to be confused with BlueTEC technology, which is designed to not only meet all EPA 2010 emissions standards, but also give you up to 5% better fuel economy. Mercedes-Benz however says that it will be using more BlueTEC technology as well in the future. Its GL, M, and R-Class vehicles are already on the US market, and will soon be joining its fleet in Europe. Its S400 Hybrid is known as the most fuel efficient luxury sedan with a gasoline engine at 29.8mpg US (7.9L/100km) in the combined European cycle.

Included in this lineup is the ML450 Hybrid, rated at 21mpg city and 24mpg highway (11.2 and 9.8L/100km, respectively). Mercedes reiterated its core aspects for efficiency; that is, using technology to solve fuel consumption problems and pollution. Mercedes also mentioned that it plans to make advances in electric vehicles and fuel cell technology to eventually completely offload the emissions generation process to electrical energy or hydrogen storage plants.
