Mercedes-Benz buys a 75% stake in the Brawn GP team

Brawn GP MonopostUnlike other carmakers that have withdrawn from racing, Mercedes-Benz is increasing its interests and financial commitments and has even purchased a 75% stake in the Brawn GP team. Mercedes-Benz currently owns a 40% stake in the McLaren team however; this will be sold back to the McLaren Group within the next couple of years. Read more after the jump!


At a press conference in Germany, Mercedes chief Dieter Zetsche said that the firm is ready to have its own factory team, which will be named Mercedes GP.

He also said that Ross Brawn would be retained as head of the new outfit. He announced that during the F1 world championship next year, Mercedes will compete and will have its own factory team. He clarifies that this will be a true Mercedes-Benz team, adding that the interests of Daimler are aligned.

With regards to the stake purchased, Zetsche gave a breakdown. He said that Mercedes-Benz has taken a 75.1% stake in the Brackley team, 45.1% of which comes from Daimler. An Abu Dhabi-based investment group is believed to have funded the rest of the stake.. The remaining 24.9% will be split between Ross Brawn, Nick Fry and other board members.
