These official sketches from Mercedes-Benz show off the Citan, the successor to the long-discontinued Vaneo commercial van that’s based on the Renault Kangoo. The Mercedes-Benz Citan is a new front-wheel drive urban delivery vehicle that’s set to get its first public premiere at the Hannover commercial vehicle show this September before sales begin. A right-hand-drive version is expected later this year.
The Citan will eventually be available in five body versions and three types of wheelbases. It would be powered by a lineup that Renault developed but was enhanced by Mercedes-Benz, including four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that range in power from 59bhp to 108bhp. CNG and LPG variants are expected to follow. Mercedes-Benz said that the European market for light commercial vehicles has increased to 700,000 each year.
Of this figure, it hopes to gain a market share of around 4% with the Citan, a figure that implies a conservative sales target of between 28,000 and 35,000 each year. Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said that it will make the most of the trend toward city vans. The name Citan is coined from the words ‘city’ and ‘titan’. It was designed to compete with a range of reputable brands like Volkswagen Caddy, Citroën Berlingo, Fiat Doblo and its sister car, the Renault Kangoo, when it comes to price and features. The Citan will be built in the Mercedes-Benz’s facility in Maubeuge, France, alongside the Renault Kangoo.
