A trio of eco-friendly concepts will be showcased by Mercedes-Benz at the Detroit Auto Show that will go into restricted production in 2009. The vehicles in the new BlueZero segment will utilize a merger of battery powered by lithium-ion, fuel cell and typical internal combustion unit. The BlueZero E-Cell has a quick charging lithium-ion battery that has the ability of covering up to 120 miles with only one charge, as the E-Cell Plus adds a 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline powerhouse to produce a hybrid capable of reaching a distance of up to 370 miles.
The third car, the F-Cell, employs a fuel cell. All three vehicles have identical design and sandwich-floor structure that enables battery mass to be located lower in the vehicle, enhancing handling and reducing its space usage, giving more space in the passenger compartment. This floor design is patterned on the present A-class platform, which Mercedes will reprocess and utilize for production variants of these vehicles, which will come in front-wheel drive.
The eco-friendly concepts will all be have a maximum speed of 150 km/h (93 mph), and an acceleration rate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. Usability will be maintained due to five seats and a 500-liter luggage space. It is asserted by Mercedes that its new liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries are able to provide a 30 mile reach with just 30 minutes of charging, with a full charge taking two hours and providing the vehicle with a 240 mile range. Vehicles that come with fuel-cell will join the Mercedes product range in 2009 "on a small scale," the firm said. In 2010 electric cars will follow suit.
