1.5 million units of the present E-Class has been delivered by Mercedes-Benz to customers since the example's market inauguration six years ago. "The current E-Class and its predecessor models have been the 'heart' of Mercedes-Benz for more than 60 years now," says the Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, Dr. Klaus Maier. "With its typical brand attributes that include safety, comfort, innovation, economy, and quality, the E-Class has delighted around 12 million customers worldwide across eight model generations."
On the other hand, from the same current E-class range, a total of 1,270,000 sedans have been delivered globally since the model was opened in 2002, at the same time 230,000 customers have chosen the station wagon variant. Germany and the United States are the most important markets for the E-Class, each of which represent an estimated 25 percent of overall sales. The most well-known E-Class engine variants are the E 220 CDI and E350, each of which allures ten percent of all E-Class clients. Diesel-powered vehicles are opted by around 40 percent of all customers.
The ground-breaking BlueTEC diesel technology was launched in 2007 for the first time in a passenger vehicle in Europe, in the E 300 BlueTEC. This European presentation was preceded by the inauguration of the E320 BlueTEC in the United Stated in 2006 October. Mercedes-Benz has succeeded in greatly reducing emissions and ensuring compliance with the EU5 emission standard with BlueTEC. Ground-breaking BlueTEC technology has therefore made the diesel unit one of the cleanest and most efficient propelling systems on the planet.
The initiative called "Germany - Land of Ideas" of the German federal government and German industry gave Mercedes-Benz an award in January 2008 for ground-breaking research in conjunction with the brand's inauguration of BlueTEC technology in Europe. Moreover, the E 320 BlueTEC was selected "2007 World Green Car" by automotive journalists from 22 countries last year in April. The present E-Class model range has gained a number of other awards since its market opening in 2002, plus an award for Best Car in the Upper Mid-Range Segment from Auto Motor und Sport publication.
The E-Class, in the fall of 2006, also apparently displayed its traditional Mercedes brand characteristic of outstanding safety, comfort, and efficiency during the longest long-distance diesel endurance evaluation in car history. 36 E-Class vehicles went on a transcontinental marathon, with each vehicle driven approximately 26 days and 14,000 kilometers from Paris to Beijing. In this endurance evaluation under totally severe conditions, Mercedes-Benz once more showed the top performance of its ultramodern diesel units with regards to emissions, fuel efficiency, and vehicle dependabilty.
