The brand new S400 BlueHybrid, a gasoline-electric hybrid patterned after the S-Class sedan, will be the very first hybrid model by Mercedes Benz which it will launch in the latter part of this year. The succeeding hybrid model, however, which will come with a diesel-electric powertrain, will be based on the ML-Class SUV which will be offered for sale in the second half of this year. The same dual-mode hybrid system found in the S400 BlueHYBRID will also feature in the SUV but it will be paired with a 3.2-liter low-emission Bluetec turbodiesel powerplant and an All-Wheel-Drive system.

The diesel-electric SUV hybrid is said to generate about 340 hp (254 kW) making it as good as a V8-powered ML500/550 version. Although the electric motors will be utilized to boost acceleration and recharge the on-board batteries, it will enable the vehicle to cover only short distances on an all-electric mode.

Compared to the gasoline-only version, it will have 30 percent lower fuel economy, with CO2 emission at less than 200gm/km. The latest Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHYBRID is set for introduction this coming June in Europe, August for China and September for the United States and will be followed briefly by the ML-Class hybrid model.
