Mercedes-Benz stops producing the CLK Cabrio

CLK Cabrio is still being produced today at the Karmann plant in Osnabruck, Germany even when the CLK Coupe stopped production last January. The independent carmaker, Karmann, specializes in convertibles and has been building several vehicles for established car manufacturers such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz. With the global economic crisis continually looming over the auto industry, many of Karmann's manufacturing contracts have been lost. This has forced Karmann to file for insolvency, and it has been reported that production will stop beginning Monday until the bankruptcy issue has been settled. With regards to the CLK Cabrio, the model will continue to be on sale until the latest E-Class Cabrio comes on the scene in the first half of 2010 and the CLK Cabrio has enough models to last up until that time. A partnership between Karmann and Energy Group (EWE), a Germany utility company, has been brewing up and may provide Karmann a more favorable future. Both companies will be exploring the integration of EVs into the EWE electricity and telecommunications network. The partnership has already produced a concept vehicle, but considering the current financial standing of Karmann, a full scale production will have to wait. [via automotive news]
