Back in September, we saw the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid Concept and honestly we knew this was coming: the German manufacturer is planning to make a big surprise for its clients. According to our sources, Mercedes-Benz will launch the next S-Class flagship sedan with a plug-in hybrid model. "It makes a lot of sense to bundle the high-price tech option to the sort of customers willing to pay for this sort of thing," said Mercedes-Benz R&D boss Thomas Weber. Due to the weight reductions and several aerodynamic improvements anticipated for the next S-Class, the plug-in model will be capable to deliver over 80 mpg and less than 100g/km of CO2. Weber also said that Mercedes-Benz will not roll out a purely electric version of the S-Class, because the customers of this kind of vehicles "expect a certain range and a level of comfort, safety and space; such things lead to a certain weight and that won't mean a good [battery] range". The new S-Class will also be offered in less expensive versions, with smaller engines such as six and eight-cylinder petrol powerplants and all of these versions.
