Mercedes-Benz to replace 6.2-liter V8 AMG engines with 5.5-liter twin-turbo

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGThe current engine from the Mercedes-Benz AMG lineup — the normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 – will be replaced by a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 beginning late next year. In an interview with Inside Line, Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, said that all 2011 Mercedes-Benz models with V8 engines will be turbocharged.

However, Dr. Weber failed to disclose how much horsepower the engine has. But considering the current trend toward more usable and more environmentally friendly horsepower, it’s expected that the numbers won’t be much higher than those of the current engines. Mercedes says that it won’t only be AMG vehicles that will get turbocharged next year. Dr. Weber says that standard Mercedes-Benz vehicles will also be getting a twin-turbo V8 in the 4.5- to 5.0-liter range. We’ll most likely get more information during the official announcement at the 2010 Paris Auto Show next September.
