Mercedes-Benz wants to replace Dodge Sprinter with its own… Sprinter
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will replace the Dodge Sprinter beginning January 2010. Reverting to its original nameplate coincides with the creation of Daimler Vans USA, LLC. This terminates Chrysler’s arrangement to sell rebadged versions under the Dodge brand.
There will be minor changes made to the Sprinter lineup, which, in the U.S. and Canada, comes in three lengths, two wheelbases, and two roof heights. Powering all the models (cargo vans, passenger vans, and chassis cab models) is a 3.0L V-6 turbodiesel. In addition, Mercedes will take over the rebadged vehicle’s sales, marketing, distribution, and service. A total of 130,000 units of the Sprinter have been sold in North America. However, sales have dropped 56% through the first eight months of the year. Very recently, Chrysler filed a suit against Daimler for its refusal to ship parts crucial to production of models like the Dodge Challenger and Charger. We’ll give you updates on this dispute as they come.
