Mercedes-Benz will expand its S-Class series to fill the gap left by axed ultra-exclusive Maybach brand, according to Dr. Uwe Ernstberger, project leader of the carmaker’s newest series. Mercedes will begin selling its S-Class series next year, and will offer new variants of the car. The S-Class series is fitted with a nine-speed automatic transmission and cameras that 'read' the road surface, then adjust the car’s suspension accordingly for improved ride quality. Ernstberger said that since the next generation receives multiple technical features, the range has to be widened to accommodate this. He added, “We can go in more directions with it.
The series’ project leader confirmed that Mercedes is planning for a “short- and long-wheelbase versions,” implying that a super-long “Pullman” or cabriolet variant of the S-Class series will soon be sold in the market, says WhatCar.
The company reportedly has given the go signal for the debut of a drop-top S-Class in 2014. Ernstberger also confirmed that several of the technologies presented in the new SL and E300 and E400 Hybrids at Detroit Auto Show will be fitted the S-Class. Mercedes is phasing out the Maybach due to underperformance.
