The wide-ranging road safety commitment of Mercedes-Benz will continue, and will further be improved as it seeks to lessen fuel consumption and harmful discharges. Among the key statements made by experts of Mercedes at a Leipzig conference, this signaled the beginning of fresh safety initiative for the coming year.
Now, it is not only the driver that thinks safety procedures, but also the vehicle! The intelligent cars they have in mind is able to aid the driver in making judgments concerning current circumstances or even make drastic measures independent from the driver when it senses impending accidents. Dr Thomas Weber, member of Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Development Mercedes-Benz Cars said: "We will not let up in our long-standing quest to make motoring even safer and further reduce the number of road accidents.â₠ He further said that there would likewise be no pause in the move to trim down fuel utilization and CO2 discharge. "We afford and will continue to afford equal importance to safety and climate protection," Weber said.
Dr. Weber also affirmed that the new E-Class, scheduled to commemorate its world debut in the spring of 2009, would demonstrate that additional significant progress is possible in both fields. This Saloon perceives Mercedes-Benz expanding its safety model patterned on tru-to-life vehicular accidents by establishing new support systems such as ATTENTION ASSIST (for detecting sleepiness), Adaptive Highbeam Assist and the PRE-SAFE brake (an automatic emergency braking system). "The new E-Class will be the safest car in this market segment and, at the same time, consume far less fuel than its predecessor thanks to new engines, intelligent energy management and a raft of other measures," said Dr. Weber.
As a follow up for the victories it attained in the field of passenger protection, Mercedes-Benz will be concentrating further on traffic accident prevention and accident severity reduction, with numerous enhanced driver support systems making their appearance in the new E-Class and the 2009 S Class are ready to play a critical part. "Thanks to the globally unique interaction of state-of-the-art safety technology, we are able to extend the cars' 'senses' and enhance their intelligence. Mercedes models therefore become part of the 'thinking' process and are capable of seeing, feeling, reacting instinctively and acting autonomously," said Ulrich Mellinghoff, Head of Mercedes Safety Development, speaking in the Leipzig conference.
Akin to proven Mercedes creations, such as ABS, ESP, Brake Assist and PRE-SAFE, the new support systems have been tailored based on true-to-life traffic and accident results. The objective here was to avert recurrent types of collision and collisions with severe consequences by concentrating on the origins of accidents such as proximity to other cars, speed, sleepiness, dimness and lane exit.
