Mercedes-Benz is planning to add two extra doors and two extra seats to its famous Smart ForTwo city car to double its carrying capacity to four people and offer extra practicality that will enable it to compete with small car the likes of the Audi A1 and BMW Isetta. The new vehicle does not have a designation yet although there is a likelihood that it will carry the ForTwo + 2 tag, signifying that it is a continuation if the ForTwo range.

The new model appears very close to the original except for the two integrated rear doors which provides access to two seats at the back. It comes with a rear-wheel-drive configuration as the preceding model with the engine located under the trunk floor but when an extended wheelbase providing additional legroom.

It is hoped by the carmaker that this will gain the success that the FourFour did not have. The ForTwo + 2 still has a long way to go and won't be available for sale until 2012. It will come with a variety of engines all equipped with start-stop technology and also an all-electric variant.
