According to the latest reports, it appears that MINI Cooper cars are currently under investigation by U.S. safety regulators for possible defects that could cause the power steering to fail. According to NHTSA, the affected models were produced between 2004 and 2005. These models have been the subject of 54 complaints about unexpected power-steering loss.

Currently, 80,000 vehicles are subject to the U.S. investigation. Back in July, NHTSA also opened an investigation into the Bmw Z4’s power steering following 107 complaints but also one crash involving vehicles from the 2003 to 2005 model years. [via autonews - sub. required]
