Mini planning new GTI version based on the Crossover

MINI Logo

The German carmaker BMW is currently looking at suggestions for a new Mini GTI which is patterned after a Mini Crossover version coming up in 2010. The new Mini will be a front-wheel-drive, more compact but just as well engineered as the previous models and will be positioned beneath the VW Golf GTI. The new Mini is expected to come up with about 180bhp and come with a lower ride height and will be more active than the Mini Crossover upon which it is based.

There is also a possibility of a JC Works version that will come up with around 220bhp. New styling for the Mini includes new bumpers both at the front and back, new sill covers and a special air spoiler at the rear and new designs for the wheels. The inside of the new Mini will be sportier, including sports buckets, custom steering wheel and optional trims. Reports have come out saying that BMW will be coming up with at least three new models based on the new 5-door Mini platform measuring 4 meters in length.

The first of these new models will be a Crossover concept set for next year. At present, a production model is receiving final touches at BMW's design studio in Munich. A Crossover variant is also currently in the works and will be made available as a high-end compact family hatch. No pricing details are available yet. [via autocar]
