Mini ready to take on Audi TT

Coupefans are sure to rejoice over news that MINI is making an Audi TT. Aside from unveiling a MINI Speedster concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, parent company BMW will also be launching a coupe version. The range will include a MINI two-seater with an electric folding roof as well as a model with a fixed roof. The car is rumored to be named the Broadspeed Coupe, a reference to the racing team that built the 1966 Broadspeed GT Coupe, a very low-

volume model that was based on the Austin Mini Cooper 1275 S. The Broadspeed Coupe would be the sportiest variant yet. The coupe is seen to rival the Audi TT, Mazda MX-5 RC and upcoming Honda CR-Z. The fixed roof will mean that it will have a stiffer chassis; hence, it will deliver sharp handling with a power to match. The line-up will include Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S variants, with a range-topping John Cooper Works version producing 218bhp.

That model should cover 0-60mph in less than six seconds. Styling will be developed in-house as with the Speedster; although there is a possibility that the bodyshell will be produced by a third party. The Speedster will go on sale in 2010, while the coupe will follow in 2011. Prices have yet to be confirmed
