Mini is rumored to make a return at the World Rally Championship in 2011 with its upcoming 4x4, a crossover that's believed to be called the Countryman and set to go on sale next year. Powering the Mini Countryman JCW is a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, which conforms to proposed powerplants for future WRC cars. BMW ambassador, Paddy Hopkirk, who won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper S, described the level of engineering as "amazing and very diligent."

He said further that the company doesn'tt take shortcuts and that it does everything well. He said that without the F1 project, BMW would have more money for the development of the MINI. He expressed excitement to see the MINI in the WRC. He said, "t would be magnificent for the glory days of rallying to return and for Mini to be a part of that." Dousing water on everyone, a Mini UK spokesman said that there are no official plans at this stage. The spokesman said that the story stemmed from its plan to have a four-wheel-drive car for the first time. At the moment, "there isn't a plan." [via autocar]
