Mitsubishi focused on reducing emissions for the 2013 Outlander

Mitsubishi is intent on lowering emissions for the third-generation Outlander medium SUV, the production version of which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The new model features a new design style for the company after it dismissed the aggressive "jet-fighter" grille, which was first viewed on the Evo sports sedan and utilized on the current Outlander. The new appearance was seen by the PX-MiEV II last year at the Tokyo auto show. It signifies an aspiration to reduce emissions, the company said. General Design Manager Hiroaki Ohtsuka commented at the Tokyo show that up until now, Mitsubishi has focused on the drivability and SUV development. He disclosed that their new initiative switches the focus to the more environmental factors.
In Europe, the new Outlander will be launched for sale in late summer with a selection of a 2-liter petrol or a 2.2-liter diesel. The emissions decreased to as low as 130g/km with the selection of a two-wheel-drive variant and the utilization of stop-start technology. A plug-in hybrid Outlander will follow in 2013 with a CO2 emissions figure goal of 50g/km, the company disclosed. Innovative options for all models include active cruise control with automatic braking and collision warning.
Another feature to be offered is an electric tailgate, which will come with a third row of seats in the boot. The new Outlander will not be manufactured in the NedCar facility in the Netherlands. The plant has been reportedly put up for sale after Mitsubishi publicized that it would end all operations there. Although the company has stated that it will manufacture the plug-in hybrid in Japan, the location has yet to be disclosed.
