Inching towards the goal for its electric and hybrid cars to comprise 20% of its sales by 2020, Mitsubishi has decided to extend the range of its all-electric i-MiEV city car. Osamu Masuko said that it will be launching more affordable i-MiEVs, which go for shorter distances on just one charge. It will also launch an i-MiEV that can travel 124 miles on a single charge. The current car can manage only 100 miles. Masuko said that Mitsubishi realizes that it will have to adapt to changes in the automotive industry and that as early as now, it must show actions on how it will be able to meet the challenges. At the moment, the i-MiEV is only available for lease in Japan but late next year, it will be for sale in Europe. Set to be launched at the Tokyo motor show this autumn is the plug-in hybrid model for the i-MiEV. Production will follow within three years.
