Mitsubishi preparing a rival for the Chevrolet Volt

2011 Chevrolet Volt
No confirmation from Mitsubishi yet but it is rumored that its extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) will appear at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year. Described to have a similar concept as the Chevrolet Volt, the EREV will be a compact SUV bearing the same size as the Toyota RAV4. Also similar to the Volt's Voltec system is its drivetrain, with a 660cc, three-cylinder petrol engine acting as a generator producing electricity for the EREV's lithium ion batteries. The car can travel 40 miles on electric power alone, and with the generator, can go for more than 200 miles. Production is said to begin by the end of 2010. Mitsubishi also produces the i-MiEV city car, which shares the same lithium ion battery technology.
