Mitsubishi starts production of the iMiev electric vehicle

Mitsubishi iMievAn electric variant of the iMiEV city car has been released by the Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi and it will hit the Japanese markets next month. Mitsubishi is expecting that EVs will compose up to 20 percent of its sales by the year 2020. The all-electric iMiEV, which has a 4.38 million yen price tag ($45,600), is considerably priced higher than the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, but the carmaker is targeting 1,400 lease sales to local governments and corporate clients by March next year. The effective range of the four-seat iMiEV is 99 miles and its battery pack can be charged to full capacity in just four 14 hours utilizing 100V power outlet. An available high-power quick output can charge the batteries in just 30 minutes. No confirmation of release dates and pricing for the UK, but the iMiEV will hit UK markets next year. On another front, the Japanese carmaker Subaru has also removed the wraps off of its own plug-in electric variant of the Stella city car which is sold exclusively in Japan. The Stella will hit Japanese markets by April 2010 with just 170 models priced just a little above the iMiEV. Photo gallery after the jump!
