To build the four-wheel-drive Pajero Dakar jeep and Lancer sedan in Brazil, the local subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors will invest 800 million reais ($454 million) in the next five years. Mitsubishi has a factory in the central state of Goias. The carmaker seeks to double productive capacity to 100,000 vehicles with the investment that will pay for a major expansion of its plant.

It wants to start local production of its Pajero Dakar all wheel drive. Mitsubishi also wants a platform that will be installed to build the Lancer, adding to the company's locally-produced range, which is currently composed of four-wheel drives. In the contract between the Brazilian subsidiary and Mitsubishi headquarters, it can opt to produce electric cars.

Mitsubishi has actually already started production of its i-Miev electric hatchback in Japan. This small sample is being tested before the model gets launched commercially. As part of the expansion in Brazil, about 1,000 additional workers will be recruited, bringing the total number of its staff to about 4,000.
