More than 3,000 orders received for Tesla Model S, report says

The Tesla Model S has not yet been launched but it already has gotten the attention of buyers who agree to pay $5000 to reserve the electric sedan. Deliveries will begin in 2012; however, a report by USA Today revealed that over 3,000 people have already reserved their car. In 2009, during the time that Tesla began getting orders for the Model S, CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk, had said that the Model S offers a “better value than much cheaper conventional cars.”
Musk also said that even with the “enormous environmental benefits,” the main motivation for customers to switch to EVs is the lower total cost of ownership. In March 2009, it was determined that the Model S will be sold for only $49,900, after a federal tax credit of $7,500 is applied.
Musk said that the Model S costs half as much as a Roadster and gives a better value than much cheaper cars. It will be offered in two versions, Model S and Model S Signature, each featuring more or less advanced features. For infotainment, the vehicle features a 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity, giving its occupants access to Pandora Radio, Google Maps, or allowing them to check their level of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop. Three battery packs are offered for the Model S, giving customers ranges of 160 (257 km), 230 (370) or 300 (482 km) miles per charge.
