BERU F1 Systems shows world’s most exclusive road bike

Article by Andrew Christian, on August 29, 2010

By anyone's estimation, the "world's first bike designed and hand built by Formula one engineers" would be terribly expensive. In fact, the Factor 001 bicycle, which is built by engineers at BERU f1 systems in Norfolk, England, is priced from £22,000.

The Factor001 bicycle is a lightweight carbon monocoque frame that can be completely customized to the owner's physical measurements.

Since the bicycle does not have to comply with the many rules for competitive cycling, designers were able to create a machine that accelerates quickly with the highest level of stability.

The bike's owner can choose the design and his or her name can be engraved on the handlebars. BERU exec John Bailey said that in creating the Factor 001, the company didn't want to limit itself to any preconceptions on traditional road bike design.

To make one bicycle, six highly skilled engineers work together on it for a week. As a result, only a limited number of bikes will be built, making the Factor 001 a desirable collector's item.

The bike has built into the frame the following: highly sophisticated load sensors, wiring, batteries, control cables and lines for its hydraulic braking system.

The bike is able to collect data on ergonometrics, biometrics, physical forces, and environmental factors due to its additional electronics. There is an LCD touch screen where the data is displayed but they can also be downloaded to a computer.
