Smart retailers will start selling the smart electric bike in late May but already, it has started to take orders. The smart ebike boosts the position of the iconic smart brand as the pioneers of electric mobility. The ebike has the distinctive styling associated with the brand. Using advanced technology, the ebike is actually very efficient while it’s being driven in towns and cities.
The smart ebike -- a pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) – is essentially a hybrid vehicle. The smart ebike, which was developed and assembled together with electric bike experts GRACE, is a worthwhile addition to the e-product portfolio of the smart brand.
It comes with an innovative design, making it a true smart on two wheels. This is the design that has earned a top industry award. At the red dot design awards, the smart ebike beat over 4,500 products from 58 countries to snatch the red dot ‘best of the best’ prize for best design quality.
Powering the smart ebike is a 200 watt BionX electric motor in the rear wheel hub. It is turned on as soon as the rider chooses one of four power levels of assistance and then the pedaling begins.
With a maintenance-free, carbon belt drive, the muscle power is converted to pedal power to the rear wheel. The detachable BionX control panel is used to set the power levels, which determine how much the rider’s muscle power is supported by the electric motor.
The BionX control panel is elegantly integrated into the stem and also displays the battery charge status and through a scrolling display the total distance covered, journey distance, riding time, average speed and time. The BionX control panel could also b used to switch on or off the smart ebike’s LED lights. The smart ebike has a price tag of £2,495 including VAT (2,849 euros in Germany). It comes complete with a two-year warranty.
