Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports to start 2016 IMSA campaign with Audi R8 LMS GT3

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 24, 2015

Audi Sport customer racing teams Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports will be fielding a new Audi R8 LMS GT3 racecar in the 2016 edition of the Daytona 24 hour. The teams will formally launch their campaign for the 2016 season of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series by taking part in the GTD class of the 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona, slated on January 30-31, 2016.

Now boasting of an array of improvements, the new generation Audi R8 LMS is now better in terms of performance compared to its predecessor, thanks to optimized aerodynamics, chassis rigidity and overall performance. Just like the first generation R8 LMS, the latest iteration shares around 50 percent of its components with the R8 V10 plus, like the V10 engine and its ASF lightweight construction.

This new R8 LMS has been proven to be a victor on the track, having secured a prestigious win at its global race debut in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Thus, it is no wonder why Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports have placed their trust on the new Audi R8 LMS for their campaign in the 2016 IMSA season. Magnus Racing had its racing debut in 2010, and since then has become one of the most remarkable GT teams in IMSA.

Magnus Racing has already grabbed their share of victories, like the 2014 Mobil 1 twelve Hours of Sebring, the 2012 North American Endurance Championship, and the 50th Running of The Rolex 24 at Daytona. Magnus Racing is also known its fan engagement, which enabled it to grab the “Team to Win” fan-vote award for the 2014 season. This marks its first season of joining Audi Sport customer racing.

The team is composed of: John Potter as Team Principal; John Bedell as Crew Chief; Greg Cates as Team Manager; and Lars Giersing as Racing Engineer. On the other hand, Stevenson Motorsports had its Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge GS Class debut in 2009. It has been racing competitively, and in fact, it was a few points short of grabbing the title in 2012, 2013, and 2014. This season, Stevenson Motorsports finally secured the Championship title.

Taking part in both the Rolex Series GT and Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series since 2003, Stevenson Motorsports boasts of 30 IMSA wins -- 17 of which were in the GT class and 13 in the GS class -- including four victories and five pole positions. This team consists of: Johnny Stevenson as Team Principal; Mike Johnson as Team Manager; and Michael Hoffman as Crew Chief.

Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports will announce their final team and driver lineups ahead of the Roar Before The Rolex 24, which is slated on January 8-10, 2016. Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America, remarked that racing remains a cornerstone of the Audi brand, adding that the launch of the all-new Audi R8 and R8 LMS demonstrates the “direct lineage” of Audi’s track-tested engineering made for the road.

On the other hand, Erin Keating, General Manager of Motorsport of Audi of America, expressed confidence that both Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports will be competitive with the new Audi R8 LMS in the 2016 IMSA season.
