Eight Audi A5 DTMs will race at Hockenheimring season opener on April 29

Article by Anita Panait, on April 22, 2012

Audi Sport’s newest car, the Audi A5 DTM, is set to make its racing debut on April 29, 2012 at the Hockenheimring, exactly nine months after it was rolled out. Audi hopes to continue its winning run with the A5 DTM in Hockenheimring, after two of its cars made remarkable season-opening victories.

Audi Sport Team Joest drove the Audi R18 TDI into an opening round win at the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in mid-March.The WRT customer team, meanwhile, drove the new Audi R8 LMS ultra into another Audi victory at the first race of the FIA GT1 World Championship. Audi is now preparing for the season opener for the DTM series, which marks the start of a new age for the touring car racing series.

For this season, the DTM is racing with coupe cars, the first time since 2003. It will also mark the first time in 20 years that the three big German premium carmakers - Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz - are competing against each other again. However, it is difficult to determine which German carmaker has the advantage over the others, despite several joint track tests including the ones at Valencia, Spain, and at the Hockenheimring.

But all will be known when the carmakers line up their cars in the first qualifying event, and in the first race that covers around 175 kilometers. Both the qualifying event and the race proper will be telecast live on Das Erste. Audi Sports will be fielding eight newly assembled A5 DTM cars at Hockenheim, underscoring the team’s readiness for the DTM event.
